Soccer Field Dimensions

Back in the day when soccer was in its infancy, soccer field layout was rather irregular in its dimensions and this created several problems for the players. One player from, say, York would play on a field that was 60 yards long, while the guys in Liverpool would play on one that was 140 yards. Obviously, when either team played on the competitor’s field, they were at a loss.

That is why, over time, soccer field dimensions were regulated, first by the Football Association, the first soccer organization in history, created by the English in the late 19th century, then by FIFA.

Today’s dimensions of soccer fields still offer some room for variation, because not all pitches can be made on a same exact perimeter. So, the width of the field can range from 50 to 100 yards officially, but it’s rarely the case with modern soccer fields that they hit these extremes. The length can range from 100 yards to 130, but you can’t have a pitch that would be 100 yards wide and 100 yards long, obviously.

The field is split in half by a center line, which has a symmetrical distance towards each of the widths and there is a center circle at the middle of this line, which is always 10 yards in diameter. This circle ensures that opposing players are kept at a safe distance when the team in possession kicks off.

The goal must be 24 feet wide and 8 feet high and it must be placed exactly on the middle of the pitch’s width. The goal is surrounded by two boxes. The first one, called the protection box or the goalkeeper box is 6 yards wide and long and in this area, the keeper is said to be protected: any contact with the goalkeeper in this area will produce a foul for the defending team.

The bigger box, also called the penalty box or penalty area is 18 yards wide and 44 long and in this area, every foul from the defending team will produce a penalty kick, which is taken from 12 yards from the goal, with just the attacker and the goalkeeper facing off. This is usually a sure goal, so you might not want to be so aggressive around the penalty box.

Let’s take a look at some of the other soccer field dimensions that aren’t usually that important, but can still regulate the game a bit further. The corner circle is set around the corner flag and is 1 yard in diameter. Basically, when a player takes a corner, he can place the ball anywhere inside this circle so he can more comfortably hit the ball and give it a swirl. Otherwise, it’s very difficult to keep the ball inside the soccer field dimensions if you’re striking the corner from right, but with your left leg, or vice versa.

The penalty box circle is one of the soccer field dimensions that are used mostly for orientation by the referee. It’s situated around the penalty spot, 10 yards around it and it’s sole purpose is to allow the referee to figure out the correct wall distance in case of a free kick that’s near the box. For example, if the attacking team gets a free kick outside the edge of the penalty area, the referee will automatically know that the defending team’s wall should be placed at the penalty spot, which is 10 yards away, the correct distance the wall should stay in.

These soccer field dimensions are standardized for all of the modern pitches, but the game will play differently on various sized fields. For example, on a very wide pitch, wing game play is bound to be more efficient, because your wingers will have a lot more room to maneuver in. Short fields benefit players with great speed and technique that can solve a one-on-one duel in close quarters.

Long fields benefit speedy players, that love to hit the ball forward and make a run for it and they’re a nightmare for defenders that lack the speed to cope with them. Longer fields also require more coordination between lines, otherwise a team might allow the opponent far more spaces than they would like to.

But women didn’t play football back then…did they?
This book dispels the belief that women playing football is a modern phenomenon, tracing the struggle to assert itself in the nineteenth century, through to its amazing success in the early nineteen twenties in front of thousands of people. The book uses both archive material and the rememberances of those early women players to piece together a story previously untold, giving a modern international sport a well deserved sense of history.

What are some of the best work outs to improve your soccer skill??

Anything imparticular??

It depends on what you are trying to improve. Something easy you can do just to get used to the feel of the ball is to roll it around under your feet. You can do this when you are watching TV or whenever. For ball handling, you can set up 4 lines of cones with about 5 cones in each line. For the first line, go through it using only your right foot. For the second, dribble through with just your left foot. On the third, use the inside of both feet and then for the final line of cones you go through with just the outside part of your foot. Another easy thing you can do (for power and aim) is to set up targets and then see if you can hit them. The best thing you can do for your game, however, is to jog or run. You need to be conditioned for soccer. Good luck and have fun!

What can you do to improve your running skills?

I have started soccer conditioning and I am the worst runner on the team I’m always last. My biggest biggest problem is that my legs start aching and i take really littlle steps. is there any drills that i can do that will help me run faster and help me run with wider steps? i know that i should run everyday too.
im also really out of shape and i believe im about 20 pounds over weight but i am planning to burn it off

ask your coach!

Please I need help with improving my soccer skills…?

I’ll break down for you..

I can do good corners, great long passes and alright free kicks…
Between bad and alright shooting skills…
Stamina low, speed good…
Dribbling alright but very shaky…
Ball handling skills terrible because I get very nervous when receiving passes and dribbling…
Tricks: Know a few and execution is good but during games my execution is pretty bad because of nervousness…
Headers terrible…
Don’t ask for the ball much because I’m afraid of losing the ball due to my nervousness and upsetting teammates…
Got good aggression towards tackling and getting the ball, getting the ball off the opponent is something really good at and my tagging + marking is excellent as I stay tight on my opponent…
Positions I play = Defense and Forward

Please help me improve and give me your suggestions and advice, also if you can give any suggestions about what I should do to stop getting nervous then please send it it. Thanks for your help!

First off, I’d get in shape. Run a mile and time it. Make your goal 6-8 minutes. When you get comfortable with your running start to sprint a lap or two. This will boost your stamina. Buy about 10 or some cones or flags and put them in a straight line about 12-18 inches apart and dart in and out through those and just keep doing that, make them less and less apart. This is will help your AGILITY. Agility is important when it comes to soccer. It makes your swift during game play and trust me that is VERY important.
To help your dribbling I’d run laps while dribbling the ball and use BOTH of your feet. Set up cones and dribble through them.
Find a wall and kick the ball stop it and learn to trap. Throw the ball at the wall and use OTHER parts of your body to trap the ball. If you have a partner you could have them drop kick the ball and you’d be out in the field and you’d trap the ball usually with your chest/stomach. Also use the wall to help with your headers.
Practice your corner kicks, possibly learn the ‘Banana Kick’ where the ball curves into the net and not just straight across. Practice your kicking too.
Another thing, JUGGLE JUGGLE JUGGLE. DO NOT just use your knees/thighs use your head and feet! When you can do 100 juggles non stop thats when you’ve mastered juggling. Also ask people to play a scrimmage or two play against people who are BETTER than you. It’ll help.

DO drink LOTS of water/Gatorade whatever. Keep hydrated.
And for tricks, that’d take a while to explain so just go on youtube and look up soccer tricks:

awesome video FILLED with helpful tricks.
AND! Practice your aiming!

Hope this helped (:

Soccer Training help please?

Hi, I’m thinking of trying out for Forward/Striker for my school’s soccer team in the fall so I want to practice and train during the summer. Currently I go to the Weight Room and work out my legs because I want to have a stronger shot than what i already have. Also I run at the tracks a bit but not so much because I get tired easily. I would like to know if there are any training techniques and/or workouts I can use to be able to run faster, for a longer period of time. Also if you can teach me some effective soccer drills for Forwards it would be greatly appreciated. I have been playing soccer all my life, (I’m 14 years old in 9th grade currently) and i already know all the basics except I want to master the curl/curve and have an even more accurate shot.
So what I need help with is Speed, Endurance, What to do in the Weight Room, and How to improve my shot and skills in soccer.
Thank You So Much for Your Help!

There are drills you can do to improve agility. If you do sprints, then jog it will help with your game play/ ball winning. To improve your jogging run a minute then walk 30 seconds, slowly lengthen your run and shorten your walk. Gradually you will stop walking and running longer. You can also just run a mile and increase by a mile every two days. To improve your shot, you just have to practice.
